Newborn Wake Windows

Most newborns stay awake about 30 min – 1 hr between sleeps. It’s the range the Wake Window app uses for babies aged 0–1 month.

Getting the time…

Your next nap window will appear in a moment.

In the newborn weeks

In the first weeks, a wake window is often a feed, a burp, a diaper change and a few minutes of looking around. That can easily fill 30 to 60 minutes, and plenty of newborns are sleepy again before the hour is up.

Newborn days rarely follow a pattern yet, and that's expected. Treat the range as a gentle check on the clock rather than a schedule, and let your baby's cues lead.

Common questions

Does feeding count as awake time?

Yes. A wake window runs from when your baby wakes up to when they fall asleep again, so feeds, burping and diaper changes all count toward it.

My newborn gets sleepy after 20 minutes. Is that a problem?

Some newborns show sleepy cues before the 30-minute mark, especially in the first couple of weeks. The range is a typical starting point, not a minimum to reach. If your baby seems tired, it's fine to help them sleep.

When do wake windows get longer?

In Wake Window's guidance, the suggested range moves from 30–60 minutes to 60–90 minutes once your baby turns 1 month old.
